What is a Futon?
The word futon is a Japanese word that refers to a round mat. In fact, in Japan, a futon is pretty much a thin cotton bed. This thin Japanese bed is made out of three parts.
The first part of a Japanese futon is the futon itself, or the round, cotton mat. The second part of a Japanese futon is called a shikibuton. A shikibuton refers to a pad that folds in three. The shikibuton was made to sit underneath the futon. The third piece of the Japanese futon is called the kakibuton. The kakibuton refers to a comforter that sits on top of the round and cotton futon mat.
In North America, most people use the word futon to refer to a cotton-filled mattress that can be adjusted to form a sofa. In fact, the futon that we all know here in America today is a descendant of the shikibuton, or three-folded pad, part of the Japanese futon. That is why futons always seem to have horizontal creases in them that look like they could separate the futon into parts (even if they can’t).
Today, American futons are made out of mattresses that are either all foam, all cotton, a combination of foam and cotton, or a box spring mattress that’s hidden underneath foam and cotton. Rather than having a futon with a regular box spring mattress, you can even get a futon with a quilted mattress.
Some futons now even have a larger and softer top section in the seat that also acts like a pillow. Basically, if you want a couch that can also act as a bed when guests come over, you should look into getting a futon.
Benefits of Buying a Futon
1. It Will Save You Space
One key benefit of using a futon is that you do not have to waste space on both a couch and a bed. Instead, you can just press down on your futon whenever you need an extra bed, and then pull the futon back up whenever you need an extra couch or sofa. The more things that you have at your home that double down as two-in-one items, like a futon, the fewer items that you have to get.
2. It Will Save You Money
The amount of money that you’ll end up spending on furniture for your place will also go down if you were to purchase a futon. This is because buying a futon is essentially the same thing as buying a couch and a bed. Therefore, instead of buying both a couch and a guest bed, we suggest that you save your money and just buy a futon.
3. It Will Save You Time
Finally, buying a futon will save you time. This is because you will not have to spend time searching for both a couch and a bed. Rather, you will only have to spend time looking for a futon. In fact, you can just save yourself that time as well and buy the amazing Mackay grey futon above.
