About Coffee Tables: What’s the Big Deal?

When it comes to furnishing a home, individuals’ thoughts tend to be directed at the “most important” pieces of furniture. These normally include items such as beds, mattresses, dressers, dining room tables, and sofas. While these are certainly very important pieces of furniture, there’s more to furnishing a home than just these items. Furniture such as coffee tables can also help to create the right look in your home. Not do these tables serve as nice additions to your home’s furnishing, but they are also functional. In other words, they don’t just sit there and look pretty; you can also put them to good use!

So, what’s the big idea? What’s so special about having a coffee table? Well, we have already mentioned the fact that coffee tables can add a decorative element to a room. But, there’s more where that came from!

Coffee tables can sometimes provide extra storage, depending on the type of table you purchase. A coffee table can also offer you or your guests a place to hold food or drinks while enjoying time in the living room, perhaps while watching TV or relaxing on the sofa. Finally, these tables can sometimes serve as areas to display family photos or hold reading materials such as books or magazines!

Making the Right Choice: Coffee Table Dimensions

It can be difficult to select the perfect furniture for your home. The challenges are certainly present when it comes to choosing the right coffee table. But, knowing what to consider when buying a coffee table can help to narrow your search and point you in the right direction.

Firstly, it’s important to think about the size of your prospective table. You can do this by paying attention to the coffee table dimensions that work best for the area you plan to furnish. These measurements can help you to determine what will fit well in the space where you want to put your new coffee table. As a result, you won’t have to worry about wasting time or money while buying the wrong table!

Here are some things you should keep in mind when thinking about the coffee table dimensions that will work best for your living space:

  • Width, Length, and Proportion -  If your sofa is rather long, a long table may be better than a short one. It may be in your best interest to purchase a coffee table that is more than half the length of your sofa. Also, the standard width for coffee tables is about 18”. But, of course, the best coffee table dimensions for your home will depend on the size of your living room.

  • Height - As a rule of thumb, the top of your coffee table should be a little lower than the seat of your sofa or chairs. The coffee table should be at least 1 or 2 inches lower than your seating. This is helpful for several different reasons. Most importantly, however, it ensures that any items on the table won’t obstruct a person’s view. (TV watchers will certainly appreciate this!) But, there are instances in which a higher or taller coffee table is welcome. For instance, if you plan to have a lot of guests in your living room, a tall coffee table may be perfect for serving beverages and finger foods.

  • Distance - Be sure to place your coffee table in close proximity to your seating area. Make sure the table is not too far for individuals to reach while sitting down. Also, you want to make sure that your coffee table leaves plenty of space for people to walk through the living room without tripping, falling, or bumping into the table! Still, make sure the table isn’t too close to the sofa to allow legroom. The general consensus regarding placement states that you should place the table between 12 and 18 inches away from the other pieces of furniture in the room.

Other Things to Consider When Buying a Coffee Table

Besides coffee table dimensions, there are a few other things you should think about when buying a new coffee table. You should think about the shape you want. Would you prefer a circular table? How about a rectangular or square table?

Also, think about the material of your table. Would a wooden table be perfect for your home? Or, perhaps a glass table is the way to go.

Finally, be mindful of the overall size of your coffee table. Make sure it’s not too big as it may overwhelm the room. On the other hand, the table shouldn’t be too small, which might make it look awkward compared to the sofa and other furniture.
