Select the color(s) you want in your rug. When adding a rug to a room that’s already painted, you’ll have an easier time picking out the right color for your rug. Pick a color that matches two or three of the room’s main colors. However, if you’re moving into a new house that has blank walls, you can play around with color a bit more. If you find an accent rug that you love, you can paint your walls based on the rug color. This might be tough if you end up getting rid of the rug down the road, however, since you may grow out of these colors.
Measure the area in which you want the rug to stay. As a general rule, accent or area rugs should rest no more than two feet away from and no less than six inches from the wall. A round area rug should be centered under a light fixture, and in a home office, a rug would look best in the corner of the room. Have wood floors? Make sure there are at least 18 to 24 inches of flooring around the room’s perimeter.
